Biebs Backs Barca

Today is the day we’ve all been waiting for… The world has been waiting with bated breath, dying to find out which soccer club Justin Bieber supports.

Well, Yanks, he just let us know — loud and clear.

The Biebs was spotted playing a game of “pick-up” soccer earlier this week, and he was decked out in Barcelona gear. Were this casual game of footie taking place in Toronto, you might think: “Ok, he probably likes Barca, but maybe it just happened to be the jersey on the top of the stack.”

But! The location of the game makes his kit selection a major statement of interest. He wore a Barcelona jersey in the streets of Madrid. Gasp! It may not do his image much good before his concert in Spain’s capital this evening, but surely his reception at Thursday’s show in Barcelona will be electric.

Hala Madrid! Right?

Wrong! The Biebs is saying, “Holla, Madrid! Hola, Barcelona!”

For the Beliebers, check out the following video of Boy Wonder playing soccer!

Weird. Italy’s Gazzetta dello Sport decided to promote it’s paper by hiring actors to fake the warm-up session before this weekend’s match between AC Milan and Bari. Interesting, funny, and… weird.

Sweet-A Adidas Commercial

Adidas just released it’s new pulse-pumping television commercial starring Argentina and Barcelona star Lionel Messi. Given the rest of the cast, this is almost certainly an American commercial. And, sadly, most folks who view this will know it as the Derrick Rose / Katy Perry Adidas ad. They probably won’t even notice that Beckham makes a cameo!

Nonetheless, this commercial is thoroughly entertaining. Messi and Rose are bad-asses.

Blackpool manager Ian Holloway is well-known for his antics and his opinions. He often speaks up when other bosses are in the news to toss in his two cents. He has ranted against FA regulations. He has fumed over transfer sagas. And, apparently, he has praised Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp a lot lately. So much so, that the press has started digging into his “man love” for Ol’ ‘Arry.

Check out this video submitted by Uncle Paul. It’s a hilarious take on the language barrier that pervades throughout European football. The video makes an example of the many dialects of Spanish and learned English… in the face of a Dutchie.

Karim Benzema, le rapper

Real Madrid and France striker Karim Benzema makes non-prostitute, non-scoring slump news! Yippee!!!

The Benz has just dropped one of his first rap tracks with fellow artist Rohff. The song is hardly worth listening to, but there’s just something gratifying about checking out footballers trying to flow.

As with rapping counterpart Ryan Babel, it’s difficult to tell just how bad KB’s skrills are. Give it a listen and decide for yourself!

Red Bulls: Another Frenchy?

Le gasp!

France’s L’Equipe is reporting that representatives of the New York Red Bulls have made a secret trip across the pond to inquire about acquiring the services of one Nicolas Anelka.

Initially, the news is pretty shocking. But once you let it set in a bit, things start to make sense. New York needs to replace the goal-scoring presence formerly filled by Juan Pablo Angel, and with Fernando Torres’ arrival at Chelsea, Anelka has certainly been knocked down a peg.

It would be a pricey deal, but the thought of France’s former frontline — Henry/Anelka — being reunited in the MLS is mouth-watering.

This is far from being real news, but these are tasty rumors.

Liverpool: Torres stays, Suarez signs

Filed under: 7) Sackings & Signings, Liverpool

Liverpool’s owners have made today a statement of intent. The morning headlines ran wild with the news that New England Sports Ventures (NESV) had turned down a $35M bid for Fernando Torres from rivals Chelsea. Many think this must have been a difficult decision given that the striker has been under-performing and is most-likely less valuable than the proposed price tag.

In refusing the offer, NESV made it clear that they intend to pull the club up by its boot-straps back into the realm of world-class competition.

To put an exclamation point on this statement, the club has just released the news that they have finalized the uncertain signing of Luis Suarez from Dutch club Ajax.

Suarez impressed the world with his dazzling striking prowess this summer at the FIFA World Cup 2010, but all of this was cast in a shadow by his use of the Dark Arts:
